Can we stop worrying about having the perfect house, the perfect outfits, perfectly behaved kids, or perfect light... and just take the pictures?

These boys were one and four, and I don't think they stopped moving for more than about three seconds the entire session.

They ran barefoot through the garden. Picked flowers. Snipped herbs. Munched on garden veggies. Climbed. Laughed. Their overalls were half falling off, no shoes, no shirts, and honestly? It couldn't have been more perfect.

I think somewhere along the way we've been taught that family photos are supposed to be controlled. Everyone looking at the camera. Smiling at the same time. Trying so hard to get "the picture."

But after 12.5 years of being a mom myself (which, I think, counts for a pretty solid family photography internship 😂), I've learned something.

Kids don't make memories by standing still.

They make memories by running too fast. By stuffing pockets full of flowers. By asking for "just one more minute." By climbing into Mom's lap when nobody asked them to. and honestly, even the occasional meltdown because someone wanted the other flower.

Those are the moments that tell the story.

As a photographer, I'm not waiting for the chaos to stop. I'm looking for the beauty inside it. I know when to step back and let the moment happen, and when to gently guide things if we need a little help. But I never want your kids to feel like they spent the whole session being corrected.

Because years from now, I don't want you to remember how hard you worked to keep everyone clean and looking at the camera.

I want you to remember the way your little boy grabbed your hand to show you the basil he picked. The dirt on their feet. The giggles. The way they kept running back to you.

That's your family.

Not perfect.

Just beautifully, wonderfully yours.

And those are the moments worth holding onto.
